The unfortunate tragedy that happened with BenGay was due to over absorption of methyl salicylate in the product. If used in excess or with heat, the drug can be absorbed systemically. A poster on PN lived on Staten Island and knows the family. He says there are autoimmune issues there.
The methyl salicyclate built up in this girl's body and was not excreted normally by the kidneys. (this suggests perhaps Lupus or some other kidney malfunction).

Biofreeze and many other topical agents only have menthol/and/or camphor in them. So since no methyl salicylate is present they are not the same, or worrisome.
