That male is likely the father of those cubs. They are usually very protective of their offspring. The roaring there was likely a warning to the safari vehicle in the sighting, as well as communication between the lions.
I am learning to distinguish the different types of roars and it is really amazing how lions communicate amongst themselves and to potential intruders, and also how intricately social they are.
