Because it works in an evaporative manner, I'd say it wouldn't be much use as something to lay on, tkrik. It needs air circulation to remain or recharge it's cooling properties. Although just having it near to wipe your skin may help a lot!

Ttkrik, you just reminded me of my childhood summers! As children my brother, sister and I were sent off to Natchez Mississippi for several weeks to spend the summer at Grandma and Granddaddy's. The house was built in the 1840's and was close to original, with no air conditioning. My sister and I shared a big four-poster bed. I remember wetting a towel to lay on; with the fan at the foot of the bed it was cool where the fan blow could across the wet towel, but not underneath me.

Just 6 years ago, almost 7 now, I left that house after living there with my Dad (he grew up there) for 12 years. I live in Iowa now. Sooooo much cooler in the summer!
