RE telling stories.:
Teenagers, especially males do it. Grown up men do it too.
There are probably experts about how to talk to them but I have no expertise in it. Sorry that is going on. Find things to do together. . . .some activities . . .
Some people find that a car ride works.
The child and you are sitting in the car togehter and not looking at each other and it can be a comfortable time to talk.
