Carnitine is part of the transport system into the mitochondria which are the energy factories of each cell, of
fatty acids which are burned as fuel. Damaged mitochondria is one theory of nerve damage. The increase in metabolism inside the mitochondria also helps muscles burn fuel too.

Carnitine is not well absorbed in the GI tract, so anything above 500mg a day should be in divided doses.
