I would start at a low dose and see how you do. The link below has some of the side effects. One is about how it can lower blood sugar levels, which, if you have sugar issues, you need to be aware of this. The other, which was new to me was about Vitamin B1. They suggest taking a B-complex if you are going to use ALA.

It is heavy metal chelator and most of us have some level of heavy metals in our bodies. If you take a large dose right off the bat, you stand the chance of mobilizing too many of the heavy metals for your body to handle. So again, start at a lower dose and see how you do on it for a week before increasing it.
