Default An encouraging report from NZ

The background is that the wattlebirds are of an ancient (Gondwanan) lineage.

They are some of our greatest taonga (treasures). The tieke (saddleback) and North Island colour morph of the kokako are doing OK. We have almost certainly lost the huia - it has not been seen for more than 100 years. I have a badge which I sometimes wear. It says "Remember the huia, defend the kokako."

The report below suggests that the South Island colour morph of the kokako (which has orange wattles - the North Island morph has blue ones) might be still alive. This is due to the work of many dedicated volunteers.

This needs confirmation of course but I am very excited by this
