Muscular Dystrophy group honors DeShields

Michael DeShields of Rosedale has been honored for his life achievements by the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

DeShields, 61, was named the recipient of the association's 2007 Robert Ross Personal Achievement Award for Maryland.

Initiated in 1992, the award recognizes the accomplishments of persons with neuromuscular diseases. DeShields has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.

Following a 37-year career with Baltimore Gas & Electric, DeShields went into community service work. He was part of a volunteer crew at the National Aquarium, mentored second-graders at Medfield Heights Elementary School and taught the AARP Driver Safety Course to seniors.

He was diagnosed with ALS last October and now needs a wheelchair for mobility.

He is now eligible for the national Personal Achievement Award, which will be announced during the Jerry Lewis Telethon over Labor Day weekend.
