So glad to hear you are meditating. It has helped me over the years so much, so the following suggestions are from my experience only.

Falling asleep is common, especially when you meditate where you usually sleep. It can be done but may take practice. Different brain waves so while sleeping is important, you don't want to sleep for this 10 minute period, you want to meditate. I suggest sitting in a chair or lay on floor near your alarm and mediate, same place each time as you are creating a conscious decision to meditate right here. Makes it easier for those who need practice. Eventually the place or position will be less important. Opening your palms or taking in a deep breath signals to the body meditation is beginning. This is my trigger to meditate. I don't want to use the word "habit" as a habit usually involves a lack of consciousness and mediation is not this.
