--you are referring to alpha-lipoic acid, which is certainly used to reduce symptoms of neuropathy, particularly for those whose neuropathy is ischemic in nature (caused by compromise in circulation), such as with diabetes.
There is a lot of literature about it--also about the second generation R-lipoic acid, which is composed of right-handed isomers, which are the ones biochemically active in the body--and it is such that these are actually considered prescription medications in many parts of Europe, though in the US it is available without a prescription as supplement.
