PRIALT is known as an N-type calcium channel blocker, which means it blocks the channels on pain- sensing nerve cells. Once the channels are blocked, calcium cannot enter and pain signals cannot travel to the brain PRIALT is indicated for the management of severe chronic pain in patients for whom intrathecal (IT) therapy is warranted, and who are intolerant of or refractory to other treatment, such as systemic analgesics, adjunctive therapies or IT morphine. I've heard it is expensive but highly effective.
