Walkers Brave the Elements for ALS

Rain didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the 300 walkers who turned out to "Walk to D'Feet ALS" at Cobbs Hill Park.

Sunday's event, part of the voluntary health organization, raises money to find a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Seventy-five percent of the money stays local, and the walk is a good way to bring people together who have been touched by ALS.


"You really need the comeraderie and support from all the people that have this disease, or are caregivers that help the people that have the disease," said Jeff Dunlap, honorary chairman of Sunday's walk. "The trials and tribulations of what the disease does to a person; the life expectancy is between two and five years, which is a very short time period."

The upstate chapter serves an area from Rochester to Buffalo, up to Watertown and down to Ithaca. With a goal of $60,000, half of that has already been raised online.
