This does not sound promising to me. It could be a CYA statement, or it's preparing us for the worst.
The question becomes...how recent were the backups? If JL has been gone traveling, maybe no one has been switching out the media. Also are the backups any good - did they finish properly? I just hope it [the data] ain't gone for good.
