Here is the article on Medscape (thanks to canoe for finding it). It is quite descriptive, and discusses how this diagnosis went from ALS to Celiac Disease, and most importantly... the patient does respond to a gluten free diet.

Celiac Disease is common and affects 1 in 100 of the general population. It is just starting to be recognized that someone can present with neurological disease without gastrointestinal symptoms. In fact, gluten sensitivity can cause neurological disease without a positive celiac diagnosis.

After reading this article, it appears that gluten sensitivity/celiac disease should be ruled out very early in the diagnostic process of anyone presenting with these symptoms.

It is free, but you need to register~
