In 1994, Amgen made its first acquisition - Synergen Inc., for $262 million through a cash tender offer. The acquisition gave Amgen the patent right to synthetic GDNF or Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor developed by Synergen. GDNF was thought to hold great promise for treating Parkinson's disease. However, the much-touted GDNF trial turned out to be a bust as the compound failed to demonstrate any clinical improvement after six months of use and on September 1, 2004, Amgen halted all clinical trials of GDNF.
