Poll Did you know ?

· Fifteen people are diagnosed with ALS every day.

· Fifteen people that have ALS die every day.

· An estimated 30,000 Americans suffer from ALS on a daily basis.

· Lou Gehrig died in 1941 from ALS (66 years ago).

· Since 1941, only one drug has been shown to be effective against ALS. It is shown to add 2-3 months to a person’s life expectancy. This drug costs a whopping $1000.00 a month or more.

· If we calculate how many people have died from this disease since Lou Gehrig died, it would astound you. 66*15*365=361,350. The population of Miami, FL is close to that. Imagine the issues we would be facing now if Katrina took out that population.

· Drug companies consider us an “orphan disease” because our population is transient. They cannot make big money on us because our life expectancy is only 3-5 years.

· They can make lots of money promoting the “little blue pill” because you cannot die from ED unless it lasts for more than 4 hours.

· There are no accurate counts to determine how many people actually have ALS. Both the MDA and the ALSA use data that is SEVERAL years old

· Veterans of the Armed Forces, who protect our Country, are twice as likely to be diagnosed with ALS as those who never served.

· Veterans that served in the Gulf War are twice as likely to be diagnosed with ALS than their counterparts that were never deployed to that arena. Yup, you guessed it; they are almost at a 75% percent risk of getting ALS for protecting my right to write this information.

· ALS is classified as various other disease on death certificates, the most astonishing one is “Anterior Horn Disease”

· The odds of you getting ALS in your lifetime are 1 in 1000. You have a greater risk of getting ALS than drowning, being killed in a motorcycle accident or dying from fire or smoke inhalation. We have methods to protect us from those, why not ALS?
