I had spent many holiday seasons as you are feeling Jo. Finally, I decided on a way to re-frame (as much as possible) and told friends that I'd only accept gifts if they were home-made - easy things to do.
But, some are still insistent on buying. I'm adapting, and I do realize that all people are not comfy with the "basics"; it's so foreign to them.
I made most of the gifts I'm giving this year - as I've done for the past several years. It's harder when it comes to gift-giving for males (because some things are just too girly and I am not trying to push whatever on them).
I've felt a ton of stress this year, but that is solely because I got a late start; I usually begin in June to August.
I much prefer gifts people make, but I also know that I cannot impose my desires on others. Acceptance is the key.
