Post One man's desperate journey to India

One man's desperate journey to India

December 23, 2007

STRUCK down by the debilitating motor neurone disease, Sydney petrol station attendant Kaneshwaran Naderajah travelled to India for two months of stem cell treatment at the notorious New Delhi clinic Nu Tech Mediworld.

Mr Naderajah's wife, Komala, paid $US25,000 (about $28,800) to discredited physician Geeta Shroff for embryonic stem cell therapy.

Mrs Naderajah said the treatment, which included injections into her husband's spine and hands and massage, did not improve his condition but appeared to slow down the rapid degeneration of his muscles. The couple will return for a second course of treatment in January.

Dr Paul Verma, senior research fellow at the Monash Institute of Medical Research, said Dr Shroff was a "parasite" preying on desperate patients.

Embryonic stem cells cause tumours when injected into animals.

Patients were wasting their money and risking their health with the embryonic stem cell injections, he said.
