Default Roasting Chinese Chesnuts?

One of the few crops that I get on my property each year that the Squirrels, otherwise known as "tree rats" do not consume before I get to them are my Chestnuts from a Chinese Chestnut tree.

It is looking like this years crop will be plentiful and I have never done anything with them in previous years, ended up putting them outside again for either the deer or the squirrels to eat, go figure.

So, does anybody have any good ideas on how to prepare Chestnuts for human bean consumption! :>)

I know they have to be roasted and saw some sites saying shell first, some not, some say slit the chestnut, hmmmmmmmmn, looking for suggestions.
