"Residency" takes a year, and "Citizenship" takes five years.
it's hard to tell how long the approval process will take, because they keep amending the rules, and adding requirements.... we turned in our application early last summer, and it's still pending!
after one year of living here (without leaving) one can apply for "Permanent Residency" which involves providing proof of income, bank statements, local and Interpol police records, a full medical exam, blood tests, marriage and birth certificates, and showing land deed and tax receipts.

naturally, since I fell asleep at 8 pm, now I'm WIDE awake at 4 am!
they'll let me stay, but I want the "Residency" so we can:
1. cross the border without fees
2. get a permit to sell our produce at the market
3. vote in local elections
4. STOP having to go and renew our Visitor's Visa every month ($200 bucks!)

rabies? lol, no, but we had to do AIDS and VD tests... geez, like we're suddenly going to start sleeping around at OUR ages ?!?!
they took my phone number, and said they'll call us in three weeks, for yet ANOTHER appointment!
gack, I wish this part was OVER, so I could RELAX in my hammock, and watch my ducks do their fabulous splash-landings in my pond...
