Mario Palumbo ALS gala set for March 1

The Muscular Dystrophy Association will hold Charleston's seventh annual Mario Palumbo ALS Research Gala from 6:30 p.m. to midnight March 1 at Berry Hills Country Club.

The evening will include hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, and dancing with music by the Production Company.

The annual Mario Palumbo Ethics Award will go to James W. Strawn, director of marketing and community education at Highland Hospital. Strawn volunteers more than 1,000 hours a year to non-profit organizations.

Palumbo, a former state attorney general, died at his Charleston home in 2004 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Proceeds from the event will go to research efforts to find a cure for ALS.
