Typically, inexperienced surgeons place one (or both) leads too deep. This is what I think happened to you. A MRI will tell you if they are, assuming there is someone competent to read it at your hospital. Just make SURE they do not use more than 1.5 Tesla to image the leads.
It is a good idea to have your MRI done first thing in the morning and and your doctors appt in the afternoon. This will give them time to study it and give you a reccomendation. You had yours done a john hopkins didn't you? They have a good DBS reputation, which I find puzzling.
Perhaps they picked the "best of 3" MER attempts?
