Fitness exec appears in Parade
By BLYTHE BERNHARD The Orange County Register
Fitness executive Augie Nieto of Corona del Mar will be featured on the cover of Sunday's Parade magazine representing the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Nieto, 48, was diagnosed last year with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease), a fatal neuromuscular disorder.
The MDA provides research, medical services and education for more than 40 neuromuscular diseases, including ALS.
Nieto will also appear with his wife, Lynne, on the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, which will air Sunday and Monday on KCAL/9.
Luke Christie, 13, MDA's goodwill ambassador, joins Nieto on the magazine cover. The friends met at an MDA meeting in South Carolina earlier this year.
Nieto co-founded the exercise equipment company Life Fitness while still in college in the 1970s and is now chairman of Octane Fitness. His fundraising campaign, Augie's Quest, has raised more than $4 million for MDA research.
Parade magazine is distributed on Sundays with The Orange County Register and more than 350 other newspapers.
