Hi Grace,
I am sorry to hear about your bad experience. I am sorry but I had to laugh at the "I got nailed at the Birchmere" statement. I got very sick at Wolf Trap once and still feel queasy just thinking about going there. For me it was clearly a stomach bug because my husband got it a few hours after we got home.
I would guess eating gluten free at the Birchmere might be risky, although I have not been there in years. You should still go out, just eat first. I was out with friends 2 times recently. I had a plain greek salad (no cheese) with plain grilled salmon on it and something got me. Then at another place I shared a plain salad and put oil and vinegar on it (I had brought my own sandwich). I felt very spaced out and tired afterwards. I really feel best when I only eat food that I have prepared. It is hard for others to understand this but that is how it is.
Hope you are feeling better.
