I also understand your uncle's actions. I'd do the same thing. I don't know where in Tennessee or Michigan they're going from/to - but it's not that long of a drive, unless you're talking Memphis to the UP.
There's numerous factors - insurance requirements, preferred doctor, feeling inherently comfortable waiting, fear of an unknown environment, etc.

I grew up in Michigan, Battle Creek and Kalamazoo area, moved to Tennessee in 1982, to Crossville, went to high school there....lived in a small town south of Nashville near the Alabama border....moved to Houston (galleria area) May of last year...dh has been here for about 25 years.
