Generally our neuros will evaluate our Functional Systems:

From that they determine our EDSS (Expanded Disability Status Scale), on a scale of 1 - 10 disbility level:

http://www.thjuland.net/edss.html

We can be in the midst of an attack, especially if it is a mild sensory one, and show no increase in disability. Sometimes sensory symptoms (like numbness) don't effect other functions (they just feel bad), but other times this kind of attack can effect our bowels/bladder/mobility, etc.

What makes you think you are in remission though, when you are currently experiencing "new and/or worsening of existing symptoms"?
