One thing to note is that everyone is different with meds, what may be a normal adult dose for one, maybe too much for someone else. I would definitely call the pharmacist and ask about your experience with this med. It seems that lots of people are having problems adjusting to it.
Yes, I agree that you should call the pharmacist. I'm a little concerned that your doctor chuckled about this and then decided to raise your dose! Like Cherie I had a schizophrenic parent and I would be very concerned if a drug, or anything else, was making me hear voices and see things out of the corner of my eye. Not only could I not tolerate something like that (don't want to experience what my Dad did) but I'm concerned it is a side effect that is just not a good one.
