I knew it was the end
When you started smiling so much,
Laughing too loud at my stupid jokes,
Being extra kind and helpful.
I knew it was the end
When you didn’t tease me anymore,
When you became super-polite.
I was confused at first,
Kept trying to put the pieces together,
Until I realized we were putting together
Different jigsaw puzzles.
Mine was a peaceful domestic scene,
Yours was a kind way out the door.
When I tripped
And broke your father’s bamboo fishing rod,
You stiffened, then smiled.
You smiled!
You said, That’s okay, you didn’t mean to.
And I knew that it was the end.
