sounds to me like you are doing this the right way .
Our mama cat did the same thing when our teensie JR puppy came to stay....my son was terrified that she would kill the pup, but it really was the same thing as you are seeing and they soon adapted to each other. Millie is a full grown dog now, but she still shows Queen Snowball healthy respect .
ps your photos make me want a new kitten!! .
