MILLBURN -- Bicyclists of all ages will saddle up on Sunday, Oct. 5, for the inaugural Jake's Ride to raise funds and awareness to find a cure for dystonia and Parkinson's disease. Township residents, community leaders and local school staff are helping to organize the event inspired by Jake Silverman, a 12-year-old Millburn Middle School student who suffers from the disorder.
Jake was diagnosed with childhood onset dystonia in 2007. Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder that causes painful, uncontrollable spasms and affects more people than muscular dystrophy, Huntington's disease, and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) combined. More than 500,000 in this country are afflicted with dystonia - one-third of them children - and there is no known cure.
