I was so sure that someone had "stolen" my placard because I drive a soft-top and it suddenly went missing. I had to replace it, so I've gotten in the habit of keeping it in my purse since then.

The mechanic found it somewhere when he took apart my dash-board.

I didn't know the rules in the US, but when I NEED TO USE IT, I pull my placard out no matter what vehicle I am traveling in (mine or anyone else's).
