Mel if you don't have anything vital on the computer or already have important things backed up on a CD or flash drive, you can format & reinstall xp.

I think earlier you said the XP disk or key was lost??

You might check into getting a replacement XP CD from Microsoft. Or the computer manufacturer if it's still under warranty..
thread with info about XP replacement CD -

Or if you really want to try something new pick up a computer magazine with a Linux Live CD - Ubuntu , Kubuntu , SimplyMephis & Mandriva are all very easy to install. But the fun thing is you can run it from the live cd to see if you like it before installing it.

these Linux programs {called distros} are now nearly as simple to use as windows - & they are free {well except for the cost of the magazine- but it's the easiest way to try them}
there's more threads about Linux & info in the sticky too.

Just thinking you could have one on hand in case XP croaks before you find or get a replacement XP CD.

It might be too late to save /back up files now - they might be infected.

Virus Removers -

[McAfee Avert Stinger

Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.] http://vil.nai.com/VIL/stinger/

some other free to try removers from cnet -

I'd download a couple and then install them and try them one by one to try to totally wipe out the virus.
