Diet Coke, and a story about Banana Pudding to make you smile!
Ada,
I don't know. I remember that back in the 80's when I was a teenager, they had that big thing about Diet Coke. I actually LIKED Diet Coke, and was upset when the changed it. It hasn't tasted the same since, although I will still drink it from time to time (my favorite drink currently is Diet Sunkist. YUMM! LOL)
The deal with the Diet Coke was that it has Saccharine (Sp?) in it. That was the sweetening agent. They found out that it caused cancer in rats, and so they took it off the market. Or, at least they stopped using it in things like Diet Coke and such (I have found sacccharine tablets...which I wondered about, since I thought that they were supposed to be "evil" and all of that. LOL).
I don't know that they have ever found the same thing with whatever is the sweetening agent in Sweet-n-low? Or Equal? Or whatever else? I myself can't stand using those things, even though I do drink diet drinks. I don't like diet coffee or iced tea or whatever. Yuck. I have tried..and I have used them....but, I have gotten to the point that I would rather drink my coffee black and my tea unsweetened than with the Sweet-n-low or Equal in it. I haven't even bothered with Splenda...because everything that I have heard everyone say about it, I heard them say about the other two. The only thing that I have had with Splenda in it (that I know had it in it, I should say) was some banana pudding that my kinda great aunt made special for my son (banana pudding is his favorite thing in the world!), because he helped her move some of her stuff into storage. He was all set for how it was supposed to taste, and scooped up a big ol' bite, put it in his mouth, and got ready to be transported to Heaven...when all of a sudden that rip came to a screeching halt! He made the most GAWD AWFUL face you could imagine and liked to have spit that pudding out before he stopped himself!
He managed to say around a partially mushed mouthful of bananas, pudding, and vanilla wafers, "I think something is wrong with this....erugh!" I couldn't help myself...I laughed at him. You just had to see his face!
Anyway..I tried some of the pudding. It isn't my favorite thing in the world, but I know what it is supposed to taste like. It had some sort of artificial sweetener in it. That is why it tasted so different. Jay said he didn't care what it had in it, it was "Nasty" and didn't eat anymore. No one else did either, so an entire bowl/dish of pudding went to waste. What I don't understand is, if she made it for a teenage boy as a "Thank you" type of thing...why not make it...well...FOR the teenage boy, and with REAL sugar in it, and not with the Splenda stuff? I found out later, from the kids Aunt (their Daddys' sister) that was what was used. I was not impressed.
Anyways..I got off the topic there. Sorry. Like I said..I don't know what they use in Sweet-n-low. Is it saccharine? It shouldn't be...but you might look up what the actual sweetening agent in it is (off of the back of the packet) and see what tests or what not have been done on it if it is worrying you.
Sorry that I wasn't or more help?
Love and ((hugs))
