SPRINGDALE - Every 90 minutes someone in America is diagnosed with ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. The Walk to Defeat ALS is the national signature event and offers a way for friends, ALS patients, families and corporate leaders to join together to raise funds in support of research and patient services programs.

The northwest Arkansas chapter of the ALS Association is holding its Walk to Defeat ALS on Sept. 27. The walk will take place at the Arvest Ballpark in Springdale. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m. Several teams have already exceeded their fundraising goal.

One of those teams is Glenn's Gladiators, walking in honor of Glenn Brown.

According to Kate Kressen with the ALS Association, Glenn's Gladiators exceeded their team goal of $ 5, 000 by launching a successful letter-writing campaign, a Chick-fil-A spirit night, designing team T-shirts and recruiting a huge group of walkers from their church. Their team participant total is more than 700 members.

Festivities on walk day will include plenty of activities for children. Among the fun will be face painting, bounce houses and a magician. Refreshments from PepsiCo will be at various water spots. There will be a live band and lunch from Carrabba's Italian Grill.

The ALS Association's northwest Arkansas chapter is at 3311 S. W. I St., Suite 7 in Bentonville. For more information, call 273-7411 or visit www. walkar. alsa. org.
