Many of us at PN use lipoic acid.

Readers here should know that there is one study on rats showing high dose alpha lipoic may suppress thyroid function.
I searched that about a year ago and could not find other articles on it or concerning human use. One of our members here asked her doctor, who had no answer or comment, about this potential.

Regular alpha lipoic contains two isomers, only one of which is active in the body. There is a purified form called r-lipoic that is used in lower doses, and works quite well for metabolic issues and nerve pain so far for us.

I used Alpha years ago with no results. But I like the r-lipoic very much and use 100mg a day.
