It makes sense that your vision helps the brain to heal when I compare it with this story:

I remember seeing something about people who had lost an arm, but suffered from phantom pain in their missing hand.

Nothing seemed to help.

Until someone hooked them up with a mirror that reflected their intact arm, so that their eyes viewed what appeared to be a still-intact limb. It was convincing enough that their brain turned off the pain signals.
