The symptoms you describe could be a feature of any number of conditions, including, as your doctor has advised, some form of neural inflammation / damage resulting from the activity of a virus (try Googling, for example, the condition ADEM). If he is correct, it may just be a question of time and of looking after yourself (ie rest and good nutrition) for your symptoms to resolve.

If you don't feel comfortable with your doctor's diagnosis, you may want to ask for a referral.
