I agree with Christina on the Klonopin. if she has got "used to it" it can actually cause the opposite sort of effect... not just klonopin... benzo's in general.
I'm afraid I don't use sleep meds any more. One thing that can help - but only for a night or two is gabapentin... 600mg should put her down. but she will get used to the effect after one or two nights.
another suggestion, if she is sleeping in the day and not at night... is to supplement with melatonin, 6mg usually are needed the first night or two and should not be used longer than a week. the body should then reset itself.
caution her NOT to buy melatonin that contains other agents such as tryptophan.
finally, magnesium. a large cup of warm semi-hot (do not boil!) milk at night. in general she might try taking vitamin and mineral supplements... ensuring she has
-- the full complex of B vitamins... B1, B2 and B6 are particularly essential to the nervous system. the complex should be "balanced/proportional" - avoid those "B100" packages - those give 100
mg of each ... look for 100
%RDA of each. B vitamin requirements can be higher for someone under stress, who drinks alcohol, smokes, or takes meds... due to faster elimination/greater need.
-- Magnesium... is useful as a calming agent in general, helps with "startle syndrome" (someone walks up behind you and you scream), tics, and sleep. it is the reason warm milk helps sleep.
-- ZINC. this is another one essential to the nervous system, like the B's gets burned by a lot of meds, alcohol, cigarette smoke, and we need more when under stress.
-- i would choose one that does not have iron. one should not supplement with iron unless anaemic. excessive iron can cause similar sx to deficiency of the same. also, taking iron with other minerals can impede the absorption of those.
-- vitamins C, D necessary for proper absorption of many.
if she gets a good, brand name multi-vit that should cover her bases.
i personally take things a la carte in semi-combinations... for stress and anxiety... mostly b's, zinc, C,D,E, extra magnesium. i drink enough milk/eat cheese that i get balanced Ca:Mg, so i only take extra Mg.
anyway, the vitamins can't hurt taken in adequate doses.
I also do the hot milk thing sometimes.
hope your friend finds some relief soon. (is she sleeping in daytime, or not getting any sleep? #hours per day?) again i am suspicious of that amount of klonopin... she needs a doc to help her with that... that is way too much.
we had a guy in the clinic who got hooked on xanax, and boy, he was as-tho-manic. couldn't sleep at all. he had taken more and more, and finally it stopped working. he was at the clinic for detox. your friend may in fact need inpatient detox, i don't know. i know
you know the deal with benzo's and having to come off carefully, so i won't even start on that
good luck to your friend. hope something was useful.
