Inventor creates wheelchair with built-in toilet

Shuichi Suehiro in Nagasaki with the in-built toilet wheelchair. (Mainichi)NAGASAKI -- A Nagasaki company has created a wheelchair with a built-in toilet that cleans, dries and deodorizes without the user ever having to leave their seat.

Venture business Japan Oasis spent six years developing the toilet-equipped wheelchair, which it expects to benefit the disabled and elderly, who can rent it out for just 1,100 yen a day.

"I thought the disabled and elderly would be happy knowing that they could leave their homes without having to worry about the toilet," Shuichi Suehiro, Japan Oasis president, said. "It'll certainly make things much easier for caregivers."

The chair requires users to put on special trousers and underwear. When the user needs to go to the toilet, the simply do their business through a hole in the chair. An in-built nozzle will spray out water that cleans the buttocks and makes them smell nice, while warm air will be blown out from a fan to dry them out.

Suehiro is currently applying for a patent for the wheelchair toilet. (Mainichi)
