PM announces cervical cancer vaccination program

The Federal Government has announced a national vaccination program for the cervical cancer drug, Gardasil.

From next April all girls aged 12 and 13 will be vaccinated, while a catch-up program will also operate through schools for those aged up to 18.

It will also be available through GPs for the next two years for women aged 18 to 26.

A decision on subsidising the drug was initially rejected by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee, but Prime Minister John Howard says a better deal has been reached.

"This represents an excellent outcome so that this great Australian drug can be made widely and cheaply available for Australian women," he said.

"It's a wonderful breakthrough treating cervical cancer, providing protection from cervical cancer."
