S U N F L O W E R S


Sunflowers are extravagant in everything they do
There is never any doubt that they will follow through
When planted, they almost jump up from the ground
As if to say that darkness simply will not keep them bound.


Then with exploring fingers they reach up to touch the sky
No matter where you find them, they bring with them the sunshine
Soon heavy with their harvest they bow their heads to pray
Their blossoms full of goodness ready to give away.


“Hayseed,” “Country,” you may call them
Svelte elegance – they are not
But if searching for a way to convey a happy thought
The sunflower is the smile refusing to be forgot.
