Car club among those giving back
Nina Ronda • The Desert Sun • February 8, 2009
Despite current economic challenges, many local organizations are continuing to give back to the community.
In this week's feature, The Desert Sun spotlights a car club, a service organization and a group of retailers performing good deeds.
The Palm Springs Corvette Club and its 150-plus membership has been a strong supporter of community charities for many years.
In late 1999, when a club member was diagnosed with ALS — Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease — the club staged an autocross to raise money to help victims of ALS.
During the past nine years, the autocross has been held at the airport in Twentynine Palms, the Palm Springs International Airport, and this year will be held at the Riverside County Fairgrounds in Indio for two days, March 14-15.
More than $61,000 has been donated to ALS in the past and the club has raised its participation to $10,000 per year for the ALS Association of Greater Los Angeles Chapter programs and services in the Coachella Valley.
Additionally, the club donated $2,000 to The Well in The Desert this past Christmas, many toys to the Kids in the Casa program, cash donations to the Rotary Club, as well as participating in many community-sponsored car shows and parade activities throughout the years.
