Cindy, I don't want to say don't do it but I think your reservations are right on. If it doesn't meet your accessibility needs it probably isn't the place for you. I hate saying that and I am mad because I am. But it is what it is. The right place is out there for you, I know it is.

I would be concerned about the bathroom for sure. If you fell you could get lodged in the small space, couldn't get your rollator in, etc. The tub could also be an issue down the line. I've seen Jim fall in a small shower we converted into a roll in and it was very difficult to get him up once he was lodged in. I almost had to call 911 and he was butt naked!

The parking space with no cut outs doesn't seem right either. BUT, I do know that can be fixed. Most states require an apartment building to section off a handicap space for you. The downfall? Anyone could park there unless you have designated parking.

Have you tried calling the housing authority? We did this for my mom and she has her own apartment through a private owner. They have a whole set of apartments that are accessible and some are fully wheelchair accessible with emergency pull cords for those living alone. And the best part is they base your rent on your income. The apartments are not state owned, they are privately owned but have a contract with the state which means you have a landlord just like you would in a regular apartment. The downfall? They have rules and evaluations yearly.

Anyway, even if you don't go that route, I am sure they can direct you to apartments that are accessible for you.
