My most recent MRI has shown a moderate size broad based central/right sided disc extrusion extending into the right neural foramen at the C-6/C-7 level. On my films, it clearly shows the herniated disc "pinching" the nerve about 1/2 way in, towards the spinal cord. I have had on and off pain and numbness radiating down my arm the past 2 years. Recently, the pain has become more severe and the numbness more constant. There is no cord compression at this time, however. My question is this: I work in law enforcement in an urban city. The area in which I work is consistently ranked as one of the most violent/dangerous in the nation. If (actually it's more like when) I get into a physical confrontation with a violent suspect, am I risking a serious spinal cord injury as a result of my present condition? My common sense tells me "yes," but I don't know if medically that would be the case. I plan on asking my doctor when I see him in 2 wks, but was just looking for a general consensus here on the forum. Any thoughts and input would be appreciated. Thanks!
