You got some good suggestions here.
How about starting with very gradually decreasing your portions? I joined Weight Watchers in August of last year, and that's one thing it teaches. We eat a certain number of "points" (roughly 60 cals per point), according to our starting weight, and every 25 lbs lost, the points allowance decreases slightly. You can also earn more points with activity, and everyone gets 35 additional points to use through the week, if you choose to. You can use some, all, or none. (Amazingly enough, I find I lose
faster if I eat them all!
) It's a wonderful program that has helped me lose 91 lbs in 16 months!!
I am not doing any serious activity, either (although I am starting to think about what I can do to increase my cardio fitness with plantar fasciitis in my right foot, as well as scoli and mild balance issues from hydrocephalus).
Hang in. It can be done!

Good luck!
