Most of whom did not survive infancy. Disease and still birth was rampant then and the only birth control was breast feeding and "natural" method. The leading cause of death among colonial women was childbirth.
Add to that, many of the women bearing large broods were slave women exploited by their owners.
The brutal reality of then versus current science and the octo-mom is sooooooooooooooooooo unrelated, I scoff at thee.
