you learn that just because you feel rejected
doesn't mean that you are

while accepting your plight
you change the words
from "my pain" to "the pain"
and let it know it is not welcome
but rejected-rejected as strongly as you know how
stripping it from as much power as you can

you learn that rejection
is just as painful when you are grown
as it was at the sock hop, when you did not dance
so you learn to help everyone feel welcomed
around you

and then, finally, if you really evolve...
you learn to not reject yourself
but to love all of your eccentricies
your good parts and bad
and to make yourself feel welcomed
inside you
