Erin, I feel for your losses. When I lost Sophie, I truly felt that there was a dog - not just any one, but THE dog - just waiting for me out there.
I knew it the second I saw him, and he was not at all the one I thought I was looking for, but I knew him when I looked into his eyes.
The universe is preparing your dog right now. I really believe that, if it is meant to be, that this is so.
We cannot just lose our best friend not to find another, we lose them because another is in the wings.
I too hit a dog one time. Luckily, I was going pretty slow, about 35, and he was a big ol' thing - a Golden or something. He jumped out of a ditch, I never saw him coming. Thought it was a kid, really, cuz all I saw was curly blond hair.
Felt a thump, jumped out of my car and looked everywhere but couldn't find anyone, no kids, no dogs. I freaked, because it was A.M, and the school buses were coming around, I really thought it was a 6 yr old waiting for the bus.
I just got off work, 3rd shift.
Well 3 weeks later, 3rd shift again, I saw who I'd hit, that big yellow dog running lose again. He was fine, but he had taken out my reflector and my headlight! LOL. Whew...
I was just glad the big doofus was okay.
