PAIN needs to be taken seriously and severe pain is a medical emergency. Although chronic pain isn't considered an emergent situation, there are pain issues that require immediate treatment.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy - also called complex regional pain syndrome - is a chronic, painful and progressive neurological condition that affects the skin, muscles, joints and bones. The symptoms usually develop in an injured limb such as a broken leg or arm or following surgery. However, many cases of reflex sympathetic dystrophy involve only a minor injury such as a sprain, and in some cases no precipitating event can be identified.
