I've been doing this one for years....you can use any kind of bar soap, whatever your favorite kind is.

A tip for stretching out your liquid fabric softener....pour a capful in a container and add 2 cups of water. Keep a couple of small sponges (I use old socks that I've lost the mates to) in the container & wring them out & throw them in the dryer with your wet clothes.
